The NGA Show 2019: Bringing Together Independent Grocers, Start-Ups, & More
eGrocery is one of the most rapidly evolving industries in the world, with emerging technologies reshaping the way customers browse, shop, meal-plan, and eat. In such a fast-changing business, it's especially important not only to pay attention to trends online, but to go straight to the nexus of it all: the conferences that bring together grocers, vendors, third party e-commerce businesses, and everyone in between.
Locai is excited to travel to San Diego next week for the 2019 NGA Show Expo, the "only industry association devoted exclusively to the needs of independent grocers." For three days, retailers, wholesalers, and vendors will show off their wares, participate in workshops and contests, and create partnerships to drive profitable growth for companies from all areas within the food industry.
NGA goes above and beyond the typical keynote speakers and breakout sessions. One of the more innovative events they're offering this year is the Student Case Study Competition, which recruits college students from across the country to help independent grocers "encourage millennials – especially those from diverse backgrounds – to join their ranks." This is a pressing and timely issue, because this year, millennials are predicted to surpass Baby Boomers as the largest living adult generation in America, largely because of immigration. Businesses will need to tailor their marketing to a changing demographic, and who can better help them do that than millennials themselves? Students will compete before a panel of judges for the title of 2019 champion.
On Tuesday, February 26, you can catch the culmination of the Creative Choice Awards, which will feature marketing and merchandising campaigns, to give national recognition to the top marketing programs in the supermarket industry.
There's also the Student Mentoring Program, the National Best Bagger Championship & Afterparty, and the WGA Engagement Event: Navigating the Myths of Women in the Workplace, not to mention the Fun Run and the Party in the Park inside San Diego's baseball stadium Petco Park.
At the centerpiece of all these events is the 2019 CART Event on Sunday, February 24, which is called "the biggest innovation event the industry has ever seen." This kick-off event will give "mid-market regional retailers and progressive independent operators a framework for navigating fast paced innovation while retaining a focus on the importance of people and physical stores as we move into the future." Moderated by Gary Hawkins (CEO, Center for Advancing Retail & Technology) and Sterling Hawkins (Co-Founder, Operations and Development, Center for Advancing Retail & Technology), the CART Event will feature speakers Ron Bonacci of Weis Market, Chris Leevers of Save-A-Lot, Sylvain Perrier of Mercatus Technologies, and many more.
